As a celebrant, my first role is to listen.

I offer a safe, confidential response where people can share as much or as little as feels right about the person at the heart of the intended service, and the circumstances surrounding an illness or passing.

Every situation is different. Some people find comfort in recalling happy memories, while others may not have happy memories to share. Some desire a lively celebration, others a more traditional approach, and others a quieter, more reflective service — or a combination of these and more.

Sometimes a friend, an executor, or even the person themselves wishes to plan ahead. Whoever I am working with, my role is to listen with care, and if needed, to offer suggestions from my knowledge and extensive experience. However, the choices are always guided by the thoughts, feelings, and ideas of those who appoint me.

Together, we can create a farewell that feels personal and appropriate, and that honours life with dignity, warmth, and respect.
